President
Obama delivered his second inaugural address on Monday. What did you guys think
of his use of rhetorical devices?
8:25pm
so
i noticed a lot of the time he used the word "we"
i
think he wanted to show how america is one unit and we need to improve and
change the country togehter
8:26pm
that's
true. He also uses the phrase "you and I" at the end of his speech.
he's trying to stay connected to his audience.
I
think that one of the main rhetorical devices was the use of parallelism.
Throughout the entire speech he put a lot of emphasis on "we, the
people."
8:26pm
yup
i agree
i
like how he referenced the constitution in it
because
it is considered one of america's "founding documents"
so
hes trying to keep the idea of "America" as one people
He
also showed this idea of unity in the beginning where he began several ideas
with "together, we..."
8:28pm
yes,
and he made a lot of historical allusions to other famous american events like
Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and the War of
Independence
8:28pm
yup!
in general he uses a lot of repetition to stress the need of change in america
We
also saw that in his first inaugural address, as he tends to include historical
allusions throughout his speeches.
8:29pm
yeah
he spoke about concord
8:29pm
using
historical allusions is a common theme and helps people view him as a
"common man"
8:30pm
and
gettysburg and basically saying how america worked to change society
i
agree it helps people relate as a nation
his
whole idea of togetherness
which
can actually be seen in both speeches
So,
I think we can all agree that the central theme for this speech is the idea of
equality and togetherness.
8:31pm
yes,
and what did you think of his emotional appeal?
8:31pm
also
i noticed a couple times where he used pathos to get his point across
whoops
idk why i said also
but
he mentioned climate change
he
said:
"We
will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so
would betray our children and future generations."
8:32pm
The
future generation is a common theme. My favorite is when he mentions the
analogy of the little girl growing up in poverty. he believes that she can grow
up to be great. and by saying this he believes that america can continue to be
great and provide for her.
I
think he used a lot of emotional appeal towards the end when he made more
specific references to things such as gay marriage and immigration.
8:32pm
hes
trying to show how its important to change what we are doing now to improve the
world for future generations
Yeah,
he stressed that towards the end when he talked about how we need to not only
provide for older generations, but also help to provide for the future
generations.
8:33pm
exactly.
through the emotional appeal hes stressing how important it is to work together
to improve
8:34pm
He
also uses logos to strengthen his argument.
like
when he says that we need to apply the founding doctrines of America to modern
times.
8:35pm
yeah.
i agree. he's saying its essential to base america off of the founding
documents and i guess fulfill the expectations
if
that makes sense
Yeah
I think he was trying to portray the greatness of America that was set up for
us by our founding fathers and how it is up to us now to fulfill that legacy.
8:36pm
and
that the founding documents still apply to us today and can still be
interpreted as modern as long as we work together to apply them.
8:36pm
he
also uses that type of logos in his first inaugural address by saying,
"the world has changed, and we must change with it"
so
basically everyone collectively must work to improve our country for a better
future
that
america needs to make sure they are keeping up with the rest of the world
or
be even better
A
change that I noticed from his first inaugural address to this one was the
shift from saying what we need to do to help our country, to what we need to do
to help our people.
8:38pm
yeah
i agree
In
that, he focused on specific minority groups and talked about them gaining
rights and in general was just more specific than just saying how to improve
America
8:39pm
he
talks about finding a balance between old and new, and also a balance between
caring for the generation that built this country and the generation that will
build its future
basically
in this term its seems like he's going to focus on balancing everyones wants
and needs
The
majority of Obama's first inaugural address centered around very broad ideas,
and as a whole was not very specific. I think this was something he was
criticized a lot for and so you can see the changes in specificity in this
speech. He made much more specific references such as to Newtown, and also
speaking about increasing rights for gays, etc.
8:45pm
definitely!
however i think the theme didnt change as much in general. like stressing the
need for change in the country
8:45pm
yeah
i agree he really tries connecting with certain issues here
8:45pm
and
the importance of working together
but
his references are definitely more specific
8:47pm
in
his first speech as well he talked a lot more about the crises america was
going through than he did for this speech
like
he talked about war, bad economy, greed, lost of jobs, problems with health
care. and school problems
for
this one he may have referenced some but not as directly
Yeah,
I agree. I think he looked at lot more towards his hopes for the future and
where as a nation he wants us to move, rather than focus on the negative
aspects we are currently experiencing.
8:48pm
i
think that may be because he wanted to have ethos
since
he was president he didnt want to point out his flaws
and
make himself sound more credible
8:49pm
he's
probably trying to keep himself in a positive outlook for the new term. he's
still optimistic that we can all work together to solve america's problems
8:49pm
yeah
exactly
8:49pm
so
how accurate were your word cloud predictions?
8:49pm
so
what about the word cloud predictions?
8:49pm
LOL
i
give up
8:49pm
LOLOL
Caitlin
and I worked together and we chose nation as our top word.
which
I suppose indirectly was related, as his top word (not including must) was
people
8:50pm
Yeah,
we kind of figured the general idea that he would reference our country as more
of a whole
8:50pm
i
had that as a top word too! but my group also believe he would mention the
words change, improvement a lot more than he did.
Although
I do think the must is significant because it stresses a pressing need and a
sense of urgency to act
8:51pm
i
agree, its a very bold word
8:51pm
that
was like the theme of the speech: change. he just didnt directly address it
and
yeah the exigency
#vocabword
of
our nation's current situations
Just
looking at the word cloud as a whole, it is extremely clear that the theme was
unity. The ones that stick out to me are nation, America, people, equal, etc.
Were
you guys surprised by anything he mentioned?
8:55pm
um
not really. i mean i knew he was going to reference change a lot. but i didnt
know he was going to stress unity and togetherness as much as he did
8:55pm
not
really surprised by anything but i'm pleased with the way he addresses change
for our country
I
was surprised by how much he emphasized equal rights. Going into the speech
that was not something I would have expected him to address as a major idea
8:56pm
that
section of his speech had a great quote too "for if we are truly created
equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as
well"
8:56pm
Yeah
this was like the first time an inaugural speech mentioned more of the gay
rights stuff
One
thing that stood out to me was his mention of a country thriving with the
success of the majority. I think as a whole, it sums up his idea of wanting to
improve the lives of the people
8:57pm
i
think this shows how the world is changing and we need to keep up with it
8:57pm
he
taking a definite position on equality here.
8:59pm
what
do you guys think he's learned from his first term by comparing his two
inaugural addresses?
9:01pm
He's
definitely learned the hard way that making decisions in Washington is not an
easy, agreeable process. He will have to use motivation and drive to get people
involved, i think that's why he talks about unity a lot
9:02pm
i
agree. his ideas in general about improvement didnt change. but i think he
stressed more of the "together" aspect
he
definitely has faith in america's future
he
knows that by working as a unit we can change our country one step at a time
I
agree. I think his main goal of the speech was to inspire hope for the future
in America
9:04pm
and
by future i think he's also referring to our generation. he knows that we will
decide the future of america!
9:04pm
i
am in concord
